New Israel–Hezbollah Attacks Erupt Ahead of U.S.–Iran Deal Signing
Even amid an impending peace treaty between the U.S. and Iran, and a public denunciation of the attacks from U.S. President Donald Trump, there was a spate of violence between Israel and Hezbollah on Wednesday along the southern Lebanon border. An attack involving drones and jets from the Israelis injured some civilians in several Lebanese towns while a Hezbollah drone assault left five Israeli soldiers injured. In a rare public condemnation of Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu at the G7 summit, Trump accused Israel of being "not very responsible" due to their heavy attacks on Lebanon and reminded him that the U.S. had Israel’s military back. Netanyahu said Israel will keep occupying security areas in Lebanon "as long as necessary." For his part, Hezbollah’s secretary-general, Naim Qassem, described the proposed peace agreement between America and Iran as a victory for his organization, and called for complete withdrawal of Israeli troops. President Aoun of Lebanon has asked for an independent solution in the U.S. capital. The official signing of the agreement is set to happen this Friday in Switzerland.
